Mary Burlingame Peck came from an old Rhode Island family with roots in the 17th century. Her husband, Frederick Stanhope Peck, was one of Rhode Island's wealthiest men. He was involved in textile manufacture, coal and oil supply, and stock-and-bond dealing, and headed the state's Republican Party. Mrs. Peck, like most society women of her time, did not work for pay outside the home, but took part in many volunteer activities, such as co-chairing the planning committee for the ball to benefit the Homeopathic Hospital in 1930.
