At the turn of the 20th century, Providence was one of the wealthiest
cities in the United States. In the 18th century, the Brown and
Almy families had established the first mechanized textile factories
in the country. By the early twentieth century, the city was also
home to machine-tool, jewelry, and heavy machinery industries with
companies like Nicholson File, Gorham Manufacturing (silver), and
the Corliss Steam Engine Company. Women of the Almy, Brown, and
Nicholson families were among those who
had their clothes made by the Tirocchi sisters. Through word of
mouth and advertisements in Junior League publications, Anna and
Laura consciously sought out the patronage of elite women: Aldriches,
Pecks, Braytons, Colts, and others.
